In 2016, Cotton Babies launched their new and improved Elemental All-In-One cloth diaper. As the third version of the Elemental created, it has the best of both designs from the previous two versions. All three of these diapers are one-size, fitting babies 8-35 lbs, and feature organic cotton inserts, so no stuffing needed. While these features did not change between the three versions, there are a few features that did. Here are the major differences between the three versions to help you compare, contrast and find the best diaper for your family.

Original Elemental (OBGE)
The Original Elemental was first created in 2009 as just an organic all-in-one cloth diaper; before it received the “Elemental” name. This version has organic cotton lining throughout the diaper, plus the sewn-in inserts. The elastics around the legs are rolled to be soft on babys thighs. Once the second version was released, this diaper became known as the Original bumGenius Elemental, or OBGE.

Elemental 2 (E2)
The second version, briefly known as the New Elemental (NBGE), was released in 2013. Three major differences were noted between the first and second version: One of the biggest changes between the two designs was the cotton lining, which was removed as a feature in the second Elemental (E2), exposing the PUL and providing this version with the next noted difference: a trimmer fit! The Elemental is already the trimmest bumGenius diaper made, and the E2 made it even trimmer. And lastly, the elastics were encased rather than rolled, and the inserts were designed wider and attached at the top of the PUL, making it easier to put additional inserts under the attached inserts for naps or nighttime. Once the E3 was released and took over the title of “New Elemental”, the second version then became known as E2.

Elemental 3 (E3)
In 2016, Cotton Babies announced the release of their newest Elemental design, which came to be known as the E3. This design took the previous two versions and combined them. One of the biggest updates to this new design was the reintroduction of the organic cotton lining. In addition, instead of two inserts, there is only one. This made the diaper even more trim, but still super absorbent. And finally, because of the cotton lining, the elastics also went back to rolled instead of encased, keeping marks off of babys thighs. The E3 is the latest version of the Elemental.

    Sizing

The bumGenius Elemental is designed to fit most babies from 7 to 35 lbs.  We feel these diapers will safely fit babies from 12-33 lbs.

We believe, along with most other parents, that these one-size diapers don't start fitting until 12 lbs and/or 2-3 months. However, they do seem to fit through potty learning for most toddlers.

    Care

How to prepare for first use

Because unbleached cotton retains its natural oil, it's important to remove this waxy outer fiber layer before using them for the first time. We recommend washing them with hot sudsy water and drying them in the dryer at least three times before their first use. (That's wash - dry - wash - dry - wash - dry). To test if they're ready to use, make a pocket in the diaper and pour half a cup of water into it. If the water is not readily absorbed, then they should be washed and dried more.

We recommend washing your diapers by themselves during this break-in period. This will reduce pilling and prevent the oils from the unbleached prefolds from coating other diapers, causing them to repel water, rather than absorb it.

    About Cotton Babies

Cotton Babies began with $100 worth of product in a tiny green milkcrate stored on a shelf in our kitchen. It grew from there to a bookshelf, then a closet, then a bedroom, then a basement and finally, the business exploded into commercial space.

Today, Cotton Babies is a privately held market leader in the juvenile product industry and a diverse retailer, offering everything a family needs to take care of their baby. Our primary focus is cloth diapers, but we also offer a wealth of other products designed to make parenting easy!

    Where are we?
Cotton Babies is located in St. Louis, Missouri. Our online and administrative operations run out of a large campus located in Fenton, Missouri, a community that lies on the southern border of St. Louis County.  Additionally, we have a retail store serving the St. Louis area located in Town & Country, Missouri, and a manufacturing facility located in Denver, Colorado.

    Activism
Our owner, Jennifer Labit, cares deeply about growth of the cloth diapering industry. She was the founding chair of the Real Diaper Industry Association, a 501(c)6 trade association created for cloth diaper retailers, manufacturers, diaper services, media and other parties with an interest in the cloth diaper industry. Under the leadership of a diverse board, the RDIA is healthy and growing rapidly as they labor to expand consumer awareness of cloth diapers and support industry needs in an exploding cloth diaper market.

    Social Responsibility
Today, Jenn is focused on raising the standard of excellence in the baby industry through creative designs and unique marketing approaches. Her goals are continued growth of the cloth diaper category in an effort to reduce waste and raise the standard of living in areas her company has influence. Cotton Babies reaches out to local families through targeted outreaches designed to get cloth diapers in the hands of the less fortunate. Cotton Babies also provides cloth diapers to thousands of missionaries through the Diaper Grant program.

    Corporate Philosophies
In an industry filled with abundant diversity, Cotton Babies endeavors to build bridges with people, not walls over differences. We operate our retail stores under the premise that "every mom leaves our store feeling like a good mom". When designing new products, our goal is always to support parents at every point on the spectrum and offer a variety of customizable options to fit their unique needs.

Cotton Babies wants to see cloth diapers in every home across America. Our owners created the bumGenius brand, the Flip Hybrid Diapering System, and Econobum. Each brand is designed to reach out to a different unique market segment. Today, Cotton Babies' brands are sold through thousands of independent juvenile stores worldwide and major retailers.

Cotton Babies wants to make it easy for more families to use cloth diapers. With bumGenius, Flip and Econobum, we've increased accessibility to cloth diapers by recognizing families at different places in life. We believe that every parent and baby is unique. These distinctions demand a variety of options.
