FAQ
- Why is stainless steel better than aluminum?
- While
aluminum is lightweight, it leaches toxic chemicals when it comes in
contact with anything acidic. Therefore, aluminum has to be lined with
something to make sure the contents are safe for drinking. Usually it
is lined with plastic which can leach chemicals, baked on epoxy, or
ceramic which can crack.
- Does the paint on a Kanteen contain lead?
-
When
we debuted our colored bottles, the most important thing to us at Klean
Kanteen was to find a safe and durable paint that also looked dynamite.
We reviewed and tested dozens of different paints and selected an
acrylic paint that contains no toxins or lead.
We
test the paint regularly and we’re in the process of getting it
certified by NSF International, an organization that helps protect the
public by certifying products and developing national and international
standards governing the production of food, water and consumer goods.
Though our paint is safe, we recommend our stainless steel finish bottles for small children who like to chew on things.
- My child chewed on a colored Klean Kanteen and might have eaten some paint. Should I be concerned?
-
No.
The paint on Klean Kanteen bottles is a nontoxic, acrylic, resin-based
finish that’s mostly water and is totally free of lead and toxic
chemicals. So you’ve got nothing to worry about if your child ingested
some paint! That said, we do recommend the stainless steel finish
bottles for small children who like to chew on things.
- What do you consider normal wear and tear for the paint on colored Klean Kanteens?
-
Under
normal use, the paint on the new colored Klean Kanteens will not flake
or chip off. When we tested paints for our colored bottles, safety was
our first concern but durability was a close second.
The
paint performs well in lab tests. Many of us at Klean Kanteen also use
the colored bottles so we’ve been putting them to the test in the real
world too. Sure, if you drop your Klean Kanteen or jam it into a metal
water bottle cage, you can scratch it. It’s also possible to scrape off
the paint if you try hard enough, just like any other painted surface.
But
if your paint is flaking or peeling off, you might have gotten a bottle
from a bad batch, which does happen occasionally. If that’s the case,
it’s covered by our warranty and we’ll replace it at no cost to you.
Contact our returns department.
To
prolong the life of your colored Kanteen, we recommend hand washing it
with mild detergent. And if you want the ultimate finish in terms of
durability, you can’t beat our original electropolished Kanteens.

FAQ
- Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
- We chose polypropylene #5 because it contains zero Bisphenol A (link to
the BPA page here), a chemical that leaches from some kinds of plastic,
which has been linked to various diseases. Polypropylene has no known
leaching characteristics and is softer than other types of plastic. If
you'd rather avoid plastic coming in contact with your drinks
altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory.
- What is stainless steel?
- Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic
elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon,
nitrogen, and manganese. The properties of the final metal change
depending on varying amounts of these elements. There are more than 57
stainless steels recognized as standard alloys on the market.
-
Klean
Kanteens are constructed from high-quality, food grade 304 stainless
steel, which has a low nickel content. Stainless steel has excellent
resistance to stain or rust due to its chromium content making it the
material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewing
industries. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert and
sanitary.
- Can I fill a Kanteen with acidic beverages such as apple juice or orange juice?
- Yes.
- Do Kanteens sweat?
- Yes,
Kanteens do sweat, just like any other single-walled container. The
best solution to naturally occurring condensation is to wrap your
Kanteen with an insulated sleeve. We've partnered with Built NY® to
offer you a wide array of insulated totes. Whatever size Kanteen you
prefer, there's a color and a style you'll love.
- Can I put hot liquids in my Klean
Kanteen?
- No.
Klean Kanteens are single walled and not for use with hot liquids
because there's nothing to insulate the bottle and you could burn
yourself. Warm beverages can be used at your own personal comfort level.
- Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?
- We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects.
- Can I put my Kanteen on a stove?
- In a pinch, the stainless steel Kanteens can be placed on a fire or a
stove as long as you take the cap off. Do not do this with a colored
bottle, as it may damage the paint.
- Is the Kanteen a Thermos™?
- No. A Kanteen is a single-walled bottle and has little insulating
properties. Keep in mind that if your drink is too hot, the Kanteen
will be too hot to touch and may burn you.

Care & Content

General Care Klean
Kanteens are dishwasher safe and are also easy to clean with a bottle
brush and mild soap. We also recommend an old fashioned cleaner: white
vinegar and baking soda.
Caps should not be washed in the dishwasher because water can squeeze into the cap.

Our Experience

On any given work day here, you'll see at least a handful of Klean
Kanteens around! Definitely a favorite among our staff and their
families, the Klean Kanteen takes the cake for us with safety and
durability, as well as ease of use for toddlers and adults alike. We
love being able to choose different caps to suit our own personal
preferences. The loop cap is great for clipping on to a backpack or bag
and the sport cap is perfect for easy drinking access, even for a
toddler. The sippy is perfect for the younger child, eliminating
spills, and we've even been caught grabbing and using our kids' sippy
kanteens in a pinch!

Product Origins

Made responsibly in China.
From the makers of the Klean Kanteen
-
When
we created the very first Klean Kanteen our goal was to promote healthy
living and respect for the environment by giving people an affordable
alternative to plastic bottles.
From the get go, we
shared many of the concerns you, our customers, have expressed about
manufacturing the bottles in China. Before a single bottle was ever
produced, we set in place checks and balances to ensure that our
bottles are produced safely, sustainably and that the people making
Klean Kanteens are treated well and paid fairly.
Klean
Kanteen is a family-owned business and we care for everyone on our
team, from the person who answers your calls in California, to the
welder in China who meticulously joins the parts of each Kanteen. By
manufacturing our bottles in China, we can provide a handcrafted bottle
of exceptional quality at a reasonable price.
For more information, read about our NSF certification and manufacturing process. - We visit our manufacturing facilities several times a year and
perform audits every six months to ensure all of our products are
produced with respect for the environment and that the workers in our
factories are treated well and paid fairly.
We
require fair labor standards, including the ethical treatment of
factory workers, child labor rules, wages and benefits, health and
safety.
The Klean Kanteen is and will continue to be one of the safest and most sustainable beverage containers on the market.
Not
only do we uphold strict design and manufacturing standards at our
factories, we also regularly test the metal in our bottles at a U.S.
lab. Every three to four months the science division of EMSL
Analytical, Inc. tests the elemental composition of metal in Klean
Kanteens for hazardous substances.
Friends of Klean Kanteen
Every social change, every movement, every step toward a better
tomorrow takes shape when people come together and work toward a common
goal. At Klean Kanteen, we celebrate and promote companies,
organizations, and individuals who share our beliefs and philosophies.
We like to think of them as Friends.
Our Friends
include organizations and individuals worldwide who are working to make
a difference, from tiny hometown environmental education programs to
nationally-acclaimed leaders in advocacy for health and environmental
stewardship, music festivals and private companies known world-wide for
their earth-in-mind ways of doing business; our Friends are truly an
inspiring bunch.
At Klean Kanteen, we spend extra time
and resources with some of our non-profit Friends to help get the word
out about issues close to our heart. Through our membership with 1% For The Planet,
we donate 1% of our gross annual sales to environmental conservation
and education efforts of non-profit organizations such as the Breast Cancer Fund,
Healthy Child Healthy World, and Environmental Working Group. We also
aim to spread the word about the great works (and the great challenges)
of our Friends by featuring them on our site.
The
organizations currently featured among Our Friends give an incredible
amount of talent and energy toward their respective causes: the
significant personal and ecological benefits of choosing tap water over
bottled water (Take Back the Tap); development of inspiring connections to Nature and leadership in outdoor environmental education (Yosemite Institutes); and relentless efforts to identify and eliminate environmental causes of disease (Breast Cancer Fund).
We hope you’ll get to know these Friends a little better through our
web site. You may find yourself wanting to know more about them or the
issues they address after this little introduction, or even feel
compelled to strike up a new friendship yourself. That’s great, too.

Miscellaneous

Warranty
Klean Kanteens and accessories produced by Klean Kanteen such as caps,
slings, and bike cages, come with a one-year warranty against
manufacturer defects. Normal wear and tear, including scratches and
dents, are not covered under the Klean Kanteen warranty.
If you purchased your Kanteen (or accessory) from a retailer, it is
often easier to return it to the retailer, avoiding shipping
charges/impact and the hassle of being without your Kanteen.
If you are experiencing some of the following problems with your Kanteen, you may have a bottle with a manufacturer defect: - Kanteens
are welded by hand, and on rare occasions and tiny hole at the weld
will cause a small leak. This manufacturer defect is covered by the
warranty.
- If
your Klean Kanteen arrives with dents, scratches or other flaws it will
be replaced. Please inspect packaging to determine if it was damaged in
transit.
- All welds and surfaces on a klean kanteen are smoothed and polished, if your kanteen has a rough weld, this is a defect.
- Paint
can be chipped off by the normal wear and tear of abrasion and impacts.
This type of paint chipping is not a defect and is not covered by the
warranty (it is the nature of all paint). If the paint is easily
flaking off, usually in an area larger than a quarter, this would
constitute a defect and is covered by the warranty. If you are unsure,

About BPA
Bisphenol A (BPA) is nearly ubiquitous among common household
products. It is used in baby bottles, water bottles, medical and dental
devices, lenses, food storage containers, household electronics,
compact discs and DVDs. Epoxy resins containing BPA are used to coat
the inside of food and beverage cans, as well as metal water bottles
not made from stainless steel.
The chemical, which is
used primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy
resins, made headlines in December 2006 when a draft report from the
National Toxicology Program’s Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction (CERHR)was released as part of NTP-CERHR’s initial review and evaluation of
BPA for the “potential for adverse effects on reproduction or
development resulting from human exposures to substances in the
environment”. The draft report cited widespread human exposure to BPA
from use and occurrence in the environment as one of the primary
reasons for researching the chemical.
Following two
expert panel meetings in March and August 2007, NTP-CERHR provided
description and conclusions of the BPA evaluation and recommendations
for future studies. Through its evaluation process, the NTP concluded
there is “some concern” about effects of BPA on the brain, behavior,
and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children at current human
exposure levels. In the following months, evidence about the adverse
health effects of BPA have continued to mount as scientists outside
NTP-CERHR conducted new studies and reviewed hundreds of previous
studies linking BPA exposure to a wide array of illness and disease,
including breast cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, liver
abnormalities, and prostate cancer.
In April 2008, Canada
announced its intent to ban the import, sale, and advertisement of baby
bottles containing BPA. A number of high profile manufacturers and
retailers, including Wal-Mart, Nalgene, and Toys-R-Us, followed suit.
Now U.S. legislators are trying to ban plastics containing BPA on both
the state and national level. While many companies continue to
manufacture products from types of plastic that have been shown to
leach BPA, others are responding quickly to both consumer and
government pressure by releasing BPA-free products onto the market. We
are thrilled to see more alternatives to BPA on the market among
various product types, and as always, remain BPA-free throughout our
product line…that’s a commitment we made to our customers in 2004 when
Klean Kanteen first hit the streets as the original alternative to
plastic water bottles.
At Klean Kanteen, we believe
accurate information is an important tool when faced with the myriad,
sometimes complex, personal consumer choices of today. Below are some
helpful hints and information resources about BPA. How to Reduce Your Exposure to BPA:
- Choose Klean Kanteen for your personal beverage bottle and
accept no impostors; made from food-grade stainless steel, Klean
Kanteens are the original, high-quality, responsibly-made, BPA-free, stainless steel bottle
- Avoid canned food and drinks whenever possible and eat fresh fruits and vegetables
- Avoid plastic containers with the code 7 on the bottom, unless the packaging indicates the plastic is BPA-free
- Don't microwave food in plastic containers
- Don't put plastic containers in the dishwasher or use harsh detergents to clean them
- Only
use polyethylene or polypropylene plastics, which have the recycling
code #1, #2 (HDPE), #4 (LDPE), and #5 (PP). Recycling code #7 may mean
the product contains BPA, though alternative products made from plants
such as corn also carry the recycling code #7.
