Details

All
Under the Nile products are made from 100% handpicked organic cotton,
without the use of pesticides or chemicals throughout the entire
production process.
Grown exclusively in Egypt, the products
reflect the extremely soft and durable features that Egyptian cotton is
known for. Accessories such as buttons and zippers are made from
organically friendly elements such as wood, shell or nickel-free
metals. The organic cotton has received the Demeter certification, the
highest level of organic certification.
|
Why should one use organic cotton in baby and children's clothing? Conventional
cotton clothes contain pesticide residues which
can end up on the baby's skin and be absorbed by the
body. In addition, cotton pesticides contaminate ground
and surface water. An estimated 67 million birds are
killed every year from pesticides.
Why
is organic cotton so much softer than conventional cotton? In
order to get the soft feel that Demeter certified organic cotton
is known for, the cotton yarn is handled with great care
during the knitting or weaving process. For example, only
natural starch is used during the weaving process.
Under the Nile is Demeter and USDA Organic certified.

About Under the Nile
Under
the Nile grows only organic cotton and practices fairness towards all
people involved in the entire production chain. A fair price is paid
to the cotton growers and a just wage to all Under the Nile workers.
The farm is located in the delta of Egypt and the community is based on
healthy living for both the workers and the environment. On the
premises there is a schoolhouse for the workers' children, a health
care center, a vocational training center, and an Academy for the
Applied Arts. The working conditions include open space, light, air,
and exercise activities during the day, with organic meals served to
all workers.

Miscellaneous

13
Villages Project
The '13
Villages Project' takes place in 13 rural villages in Sharkeya, Egypt.
Under the Nile:
- provides excellent
health care
- offers dental and
physical health education
- pays fair wages
- provides two organic
meals to workers each day
- operates a school from
kindergarten through high school
- brings work to villages,
allowing women to care for their families
To
ensure quality, each village is trained and assigned responsibility for making
one style of Under the Nile's stuffed
fruit and vegetables toys. A carefully selected woman from the village manages
the workers and trains new
women wanting to participate.
Each
village receives an advance for their work and the materials needed to produce
that toy. Upon completion, Under
the Nile picks up the finished goods and pays the women fair wages for their
work.
